The WMS has taken on a new and exciting Prayer Shawl ministry. These shawls will be available for church members and adherents as well as for further outreach into the community. The kinds of shawls that the WMS will eventually have available will be knitted or sewn fleece.
In 1998, Janet Severi Bristow and Victoria Galo, gave birth to this ministry in the USA. Compassion and the love of knitting/crocheting/sewing have been combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual practice which reaches out to those in need of comfort, as well as in celebration and joy. Many blessings are prayed into every shawl.
During the making of the shawl, prayers are said for the recipient. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered by the clergy before the shawl is sent on its way.
The Prayer Shawls can be offered at in a variety of circumstances including at the time of medical procedures, bereavement, meditation, marriage, birthing, wedding gift, illness and recovery, graduation, birthday, anniversary, or just socializing … there are endless possibilities.
In 1998, the creator of the shawls, Janet Severi Bristow, wrote – “Shawls … made for centuries, universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify.”
Please contact a member of the Women’s Missionary Society with any requests for a warm Prayer Shawl for either yourself or a friend.
